Bob Newell
"Newell Inside Golf, The way he sees IT!"
When I was going to High School, I worked both courses.
1st the time, Jim Twohig was the Greenskeeper for both courses and when I went to visit my junior high girlfriend, his daughter on Sunday he and I went to the courses to relocate the sprinklers.
2nd time After having to get married with two kids at 19, I was working nights at Hamilton Standard, going to night school for an Engineering Degree.
And after work at 0600 would go and mow green at Franconia. I met the pro-Henry Bontempo who was concerned with my work schedule and having to work two jobs etc. so he saw when I played 5 holes after mowing greens that I was playing with my mom’s clubs so he said “Bob those clubs suck come to see me on payday and I will fix you up”
I went in on Friday, he said did you get paid? Yes. So here is a set of used First Flight Driver, 3 and 5 woods. How much did you get paid? $27. 00.. OK give it to me.
As I was leaving he said “Hey come back I need to give you your change”,
He gave me $30 and a free lesson.
This was when I decided to help young golfers with their game, which I have done all my life.
I am in my final two-year renewal after a car accident two years ago.
After the accident, I had a neck brace on and the Dr. said no golf, travel, or driving until 2-3 months when it comes off…shit!
So, taking the cure on my way, I walked 2 ½ - 3 miles a day with a neck brace. Started swinging a 5 iron out to see if there was a problem, so continued to practice a new swing each day for 7 weeks. 50 times each day each arm
The result, after 1500 practice swings, was a new swing, consistent but short. So I switched to 101/2 driver – 160 yards, 12 drivers off first cut for a 155-yard fairway shot, The rest of the clubs are straight and consistent.
So, while pondering on my walk I decided to change my evil ways:
Lost weight 42 w to 36 w
Stopped drinking a year ago.
Joined AA and have started to become – quiet, listen, say a prayer every morning, and try to be patient, humble, loving, and tolerant. Quitting a lot of things. Starting anew on other things.
I REALLY, miss Blind Golf which is in PA and Canadian Leaders, and with blind kids and adults…I was good.
